GNW 4th of July Parade: 103 degrees...

Once again my wife and I along with several of our neighbors decided to brave the scorching summer sun and join in the annual Great Northwest Independence Day Parade. The parade which starts at Zachry Middle School and follows Timber Path to the Lodge of the Great Northwest is a fun way to get out and celebrate the 4th.This year, the Grand Marshal was District 6 Councilman Ray Lopez, seen here riding in the Corvette of Robert Rodkey. In addition to Robert's 'vette, there were 8 or 9 other Corvette's from the local owners club.Members of the San Antonio Fire Department were quite a hit with youngsters along the parade route. And of course, members of the San Antonio Police Department were out in force to direct traffic and make sure the parade travelled smoothly down the road. The parade had numerous groups from the local Northwest Vikings youth football team to the Boy Scouts.

And then of course, there was out motley crew of characters. With Ol' Betsy pulling a trailer, and several of us manning electric scooters, our theme was Timber Five-O. Okay, I know some explanation is in order.
Bear with me on this. Our zip code is 78250 (or The Five Oh for short). Next, you think back to the old Hawaii Five-O TV show, and the fact that most of the streets in our neighborhood start with the word "Timber", and the next thing you know, we are in Hawaiian shirts, palm trees and we are Timber Five-O. I know, it really is a stretch, but we had fun anyway. And in spite of the record 103 degree temperature, many people found enough shade needed to keep cool and lined the parade route and enjoyed the spectacle of it all.

And for those who couldn't witness it in person... video taken by my son who is home for the weekend. Enjoy!

"Stared" in 78250...

Fellow Silver Creek resident and Five Oh correspondent Gus sends us a picture he snapped while sitting at the 4-way stop near Timberwilde Elementary and staring at the marquee. I've been accused of not being as smart as a 5th grader, so I don't want to really speculate as to what the real message is intended to be. Maybe you know.

Gus on the other hand is at least as smart as a 5th grader, and suggests that what they meant to say was, Thanks for a Good Start - as in, start of the school year. I was so hoping that Staring Contests had become a sport, and that's why Timberwilde was a Texas Recognized School.

Strange in 78250: The Case of the Missing Pants...

If you are a fan of detective shows like CSI or Investigative Reports, you know that we have clearly stumbled upon a crime in The Five Oh, and other than taking a picture in case they need some evidence, I'm not that good of a sleuth to figure out just what happened. We were parked in the HEB grabbing a few essentials when my wife spotted what appeared to be a perfectly good pair of tennis shoes sitting atop a trash can, and a pair of designer jeans, turned inside-out, laying beside the same trash container.

Do you suppose some homeless guy traded up? I mean, could it be that there was a box containing some new slacks and some comfortable boots there before, and the person simply traded?

What if the previous owner was out streaking around the parking lot and we stumbled upon the place where he was holding his clothes? But then again, in this heat, if you streak you should wear shoes (and plenty of sunscreen).

I did sniff from a distance and did not note any smell associated with an "accidental discharge" that may have caused someone to simply leave their jeans, but even so, why would you leave your shoes behind, just because your crapped your pants?
Maybe the guy robbed a bank and was trying to get rid of the clothes in case there was a line-up and he didn't want the bank tellers to identify him. I've never been in a line-up, but I'm guessing that the guy without pants is going to stand out more than a guy in jeans and white tennis shoes. Just a thought.

Geeze. It just occured to me that I never bothered to look inside the trash can. I hope there isn't some body parts in there. It'd be just my luck to go out of my way to take a picture of a crime scene and miss the most important details.

If you have a theory or actually know why someobody left their pants and shoes at HEB, use the comments button below. Otherwise, this is just plain strange.

Lookin' Good in The Five-Oh...

Sometimes, all I can do is shut-up and let the camera do its job...But your captions would be fine... You know, "What not to wear on a windy day" or "Say, is that a blimp in your pants...?" Poor guy. Hey, I've had the Venti(tm) Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino at Starbucks and I know it can happen.

I'm just sayin...

Trip Report: Back in The Five-Oh...

And just like magic, my little trip on the plane is over and we are all back in San Antonio without incident.

I'll have a few more reports regarding our excellent visit with my family in Brandon; turns out we have to eat regardless of where we are, so needless to say, my camera and my taste buds were in full attendance.

Our flight back to San Antonio was via Memphis and I am pleased to report that the flight crew kept us abreast of the Spurs-Hornets score during the flight. It is always enjoyable to hear your fellow passengers cheering as opposed to screaming - if you know what I mean.

Oh - just a little comment on technology. I have the type of DVR that allows you to log into the box via the wonder of the World Wide Web. As such, I directed my box in Texas to record the Spurs-Hornets game all the way from Florida. I know, for those of you who still can't make your Beta-Max stop blinking 12:00, it may as well be magic. But in spite of the brilliance of this technology, I do have a complaint.

As our flight hits the runway, my son whips open his cell phone and commences to find the live score to the game. As we get into the baggage claim area, several other folks have the scores updating every minute or so. We get out to our van parked in long-term parking, and tune into 1200-WOAI, and listen live to the last full minute or so of the game. So we got it. We know that the Spurs win game 7 and we are happy.

So I get home, turn on the ol' DVR and decide to watch the last five minutes of the game. If you saw it, you know it was pretty intense up until about the last 50 seconds.

Yea. That's about the time my DVR decided that the game was over. You gotta be shittin' me! 50 seconds left in a game 7. I thought it was the season finale to The Sopranos!

Anyway. More on the trip to Florida and the usual nonsense when I get my bags unpacked.

Whirlwind Week Report: And it isn't over...

I hope you can forgive my lack of exciting reporting coming from The Five-Oh in the past week or more but things have been quite hectic and rewarding on several fronts.

I shan't bore you with the Neighborhood Watch related issues that made big news, but I'll send you to this link regarding a tragic situation and leave it at that for the time being.

In other local neighborhood excitement, our board of directors (there are only four currently) figured out who would be the new Chair and vice-Chair. I'm not sure if it is public info or not, so I suppose we'll have to wait until the next meeting for the announcement. The really interesting thing to me is that one of our board members no longer lives in the neighborhood. In other words, someone who will not be impacted in any way by decisions of the board is helping (or in some cases, hindering) the things that impact me! I think that is wrong. What about you?

Okay, forget all that unpleasantness. So last night we were off to attend my son's commencement ceremony - he graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Unlike many of his fellow graduates, he was on the 4-year plan as opposed to the apparently common 5, 6 and 7 year programs. You know, a lot of people go to college for seven years. I know, they're called doctors. Sorry.

Just as we were leaving the house, my daughter called and said that her flight from Philadelphia had been delayed and that now, she wouldn't be getting into San Antonio until Saturday AM instead of late Friday night. I know, you are probably asking yourself why I, as a good father, didn't volunteer to drive to Dallas, pick her and her husband up at DFW, then drive back to San Antonio?
People, Texas is a big state. It would take me five and a half hours to get from my side of SA to DFW and and other five and a half hours to get back! And we still had to attend my son's graduation!

Luckily, she has a friend who lives just near the airport, so they got to have a nice visit and about 4 hours of sleep before taking a flight out this morning. Oh, and in case you are wondering, American Airlines didn't offer them a hotel room, or a pillow - and surely no coupon for a free flight or bag of peanuts.

But back to the graduation. This event was held at the UTSA Convocation Center. Not a bad place for a ceremony of this size.
We are usually pretty good at picking out our kids from a crowd of people, but without binoculars or a telephoto lens, we spent most the ceremony fawning over some kid who looks like my son from half a mile away. I'm sure that kid will do well in life, but as soon as he got up to walk, we knew it wasn't our son. Bad posture. As it turned out, we were never in a position to see our son until he got up to walk to the stage. Perhaps that other young man's parents were in the audience and made the same mistake with our kid.

So, they have these things down to a science. The administration knows that you couldn't care less about the other 700 people graduating, you only care about your own kid. Speeches were short, there were no politically motivated anti-W comments and in general, once they started reading off names, it was like fine clock-work.

Unfortunately, they still go alphabetically, and with a last name starting with "S", we had a lot of waiting to do. And we did wait, very politely I might add. But funny, as the end of the commencement neared and as we began to get excited for our son (and apparently some kid who looked just like our son), we noticed that the people who have graduates with last names starting in the first half of the alphabet were starting to simply get up and leave.
Hey, I don't care if you want to leave and not watch my kid graduate even though I gave a heartfelt golf-clap when your kid walked the stage, but please don't block my view of the stage as you exit your seat. How discourteous is that? And it wasn't one or two families. I'm talking half the place was emptying when there was literally ten minutes left.Well guess what suckers, when the commencement was over, UTSA brought out the Mariachis! How Purro San Antonio is that, to bust out orange sombrero wearing mariachis? And they were damn good. To all you people who left early - piss off!So it isn't over yet. My daughter and son-in-law got in this morning and shortly, we are off to my son's commissioning ceremony. I know a few of you have seen me around minus the mustache and goatee. I'm stuffing myself into my service dress uniform for the ceremony and had to shave to be in "regs". Hopefully there won't be a weigh-in. My daughter has come with her uniform and she will give my son his first official salute. Bust out your hankies.

We'll zip over to Florida shortly so my dad (who for medical reasons couldn't make it tonight) can slip into his uniform and provide another salute. As you might expect, our military family is pretty proud of our first officer in the family.

So, if I don't have more goofy pictures or updates on the latest restaurants for several more days or so, I hope you can understand. Maybe now is a good time to go back and read some of the older posts. You know you want to.

What Happens When City Folk Move to The Country...

I kid you not, just the other night whilst watching the Spurs Vs. Hornets debacle with the ring of fire incident, I heard my dog barking in the back yard. I interrupted my mocking of the Hornets' staff to go investigate, and sure enough, my dog Gracie is barking at an Opossum frozen on the fence.

Yea, here in The Five-Oh, we get opossums, raccoons, skunks and other forms of wildlife.

So a friend sent me this picture with the caption:"What Happens When City Folk Move to The Country".

Great Northwest Annual Meeting of Members: No Quorum...

I’m sure this sort of thing is a bore to readers who don’t live anywhere near The Five Oh, so I’ll forgive you if need to hit the back-button now. I’m talking of course about my neighborhood association’s failed effort to vote for new board members and pass a few by laws. I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but we needed something like 436 members to either submit a proxy or show up in person to have a quorum. We missed the mark by just over 100. This is embarrassing for an association of close to 5,000 homes.Without a quorum, the Chairman, who by the way was one of the directors whose term expired at midnight, had no choice but to move on with the non-agenda portion of the agenda. In other words, if a quorum had been met, the meeting could have been called to order and votes could have taken place, then the fun things could happen. Without the quorum; no call to order, no votes etc. But a large crowd was still assembled, four scholarships and nearly 200 awards still needed to be presented and food needed to be eaten. Our chairman did an outstanding job, considering the disappointment of the situation, of keeping the event going, but as you can imagine, someone just had to attempt to create controversy from something that wasn’t.

With the lawyer consulted “Six ways from Sunday”, the chairman advised the membership that there was no quorum, and asked that if anyone present had not signed up to vote, to please do so. But again, we were way short in our numbers. In explaining the situation using a public address system, it was made very clear to everyone in the place that we did not have a quorum. The Chairman repeated the numbers required, the numbers obtained and what would happen without a quorum. Following the announcement, one of the other directors stood before the assembled crowd and asked the chairman if he had told the crowd that there was no quorum. I made eye contact with my wife who was seated not far from the director in question and she simply rolled her eyes in disgust. As the cameraman video-taping the event, I observed most of the crowd look at this director and mouth, “What the Hell?” So once again, the chair repeated the numbers and re-stated the lack of a quorum. People grumbled as if knowing that this type of buffoonery could be expected for the remainder of the event. Now that the clueless director was appraised of our current status and up to speed with the rest of the membership, I figured we might get on to more pleasant things.

What ensued was a barrage of irrelevant questions regarding procedures and rules and by laws and such, when the fact of the matter was, the remainder of the evening was nothing more, and by rule could be nothing more, than a get together by members to recognize students and residents for their good deeds. It seemed clear to any observer that some people simply have no intention of playing well with others.

Moving on... There was another unfortunate incident that was thankfully avoided by alert staff. A former resident was for whatever reason invited to the meeting of members as a guest. I can’t for the life of me understand why this would be something you would attend if you don’t live in the neighborhood, especially when we couldn’t even get enough participation from the people who do live here, but regardless, this person was invited.

Coincidently, the former resident’s former spouse (who is still a resident) and her new husband were in attendance and suddenly, the reasoning seemed all too obvious. After some brief discussions, this former resident was barred from entering.
The scholarship committee presented four different scholarships to graduating seniors and unfortunately, I don’t have the names of the students handy, but I will tell you that the presentation was very well done and quite a refreshing change of pace for the evening. The fine folks at Taqueria El Nortenito, who have provided their catering services free to the association several times, once again put out a nice spread for folks to partake in.Following the vittles, several presentations were made for various things and then the chairman gave a final year in review sort of briefing, showing the progress made through the year. There has been a lot of progress made in the last year and in spite of what is effectively a split board, many improvements and accomplishments came to fruition.By the time things wrapped up at almost 10pm, only a few remained and yet, one former director made a much anticipated and prepared for shot at the outbound chairman by asking for a financial report. From memory, he cited a few key financials and left it at that. As audience members headed for the door, the former director whined a bit but was universally ignored. Sad.

I am by nature a cynic when it comes to politics from the national level all the way to dog catcher (no offense to dog catchers). But I feel pretty confident that with our new community manager, the remaining board directors, and the fact that the director, who by most observers evaluation hinders progress has moved from the neighborhood and should be abandoning the position, that we will get through this.In spite of the embarrassing showing by my fellow residents, I have to think that people are comfortable with the new direction the board has taken in the last year, or they would have shown up en masse to vote out the directors.

I’m thinking positive.

Seymour Destruction: Five Oh Style...

I had written a few times about the Reverend Seymour Perkins, an artist of sorts and a counselor to the addicted, who has been a fixture on San Antonio's near East Side. Aside from the story making the news due to Rev. Perkins popularity, I wondered if this type of thing happened in "normal neighborhoods". Well look no more, code compliance has made its way to the Five Oh.

Here's the short version: Some folks attempted to build a house in the neighborhood and stopped before it was complete. Hood rats made their way into the empty dwelling and commenced to tag things up, smoke the chronic and pork one another without regard for paying taxes or meeting the minimal requirements of the deed restrictions of our HOA. Following a year of bureaucracy, it was on the owners to tear down the house. We learned that the owners had built a cement frickin' house, roof included. WTF? I get cement floors and cement walls, but cement ceilings and roofs? Nice shingles, dumbass!
Talk about Strange in 78250.So here we go. The order comes down to demolish the house and the owner/builder gets started by cutting out portions of the roof. The cement roof. And now we have an unstable situation. Heaven forbid a handful of teens go into this house to tag the place and it fall on them. Well, let me try that again. Heaven forbid an innocent person find them self in that abandon house and it fall on them.So as you might imagine, lots of folks want this place torn down, and now! And I mean with the same interest that the city and the media has going for the Seymour Perkins place.Turns out, demolition was underway today, Saturday. And here are your pictures.Rest easy, you shan't see any artwork here, and apparently, no cheap hookers. Perhaps we need an art district in the Five Oh.

GNWCIA Report: Nothing to Report...

Last night I made the short trip down the street to the Lodge of the Great Northwest to attend the meeting of the board of directors of the Great Northwest Community Improvement Association and really, there was nothing worth mentioning. Aside from me, only two residents and a security guard to keep us under control showed. The directors not only got through the entirety of the business without controversy, they even held the closed meeting portion in front of the assembled crowd, though I confess I left before it was officially over.
One item that I will look into a bit further was brought up regarding a neighborhood kid who saw some other yout's doing graffiti. Supposedly, the kid intervened and as you might imagine, caused some grief for him. The directors would like to recognize this young person and that, friends, is a great thing.

Other than that - notta!
