Lunch Report: Carmines in Ybor City...

One of our normal stops during a visit to Tampa includes The Columbia in Ybor City. This visit, instead of Columbia, we grabbed a late lunch in a place called Carmines and enjoyed some Cuban sandwiches, deviled crabs and calamari.Unfortunately, we did not have the time this trip to really spend anytime walking around in Ybor, but it is on our list of things to do next visit. From the few pictures I took, you can tell that it is a place you could spend some considerable time browsing around. Speaking of browsing, see them all over at Flickr.I had gotten in the mood for deviled crab by ordering one from La Septima in Brandon the previous night, but because I was so eager to get it, I simply unwrapped it and inhaled it without even thinking of taking a "before" picture. When we went into Carmines, I opted for half a Cuban and the devil crab. Once again, I am only slightly embarrassed to report that I consumed the entire devil crab without photo even though my camera was sitting in front of me.This is a picture of my sister's devil crab, obviously a work in progress. I know, this is below my normal standards for visual presentation of food I like, but I love me a deviled crab, and this will just have to do. I promise to do better.

By the way, can we get devil crabs in San Antonio? Somebody, notify me pronto!
My wife ordered up a plate of calamari as an appetizer and it was quickly passed around the table for people to pick off of. I'm a firm believer that you have to eat calamari as soon as it comes to the table, piping hot. Once around and I shan't be picking off of it. But it was good and my wife and brother-in-law really enjoyed it.My brother and sister-in-law both had salads and the size was good and the looked great. Look at the shrimp!
The rest of us went with half Cubans, the sandwiches, not the cigars. Excellent! I know it is a simple little sandwich, but just wonderful, especially when you only get to experience it - the real thing - every so often.

I don't want to sound like a travel agent, but if your travel plans ever include heading south of Disney and going into the Tampa area, you sure ought to make time to visit Ybor City, and you couldn't go wrong with a stop into Carmines.

The Home of The Dream Clinic: 88.5 WMNF...

If you scroll down far enough on this page, you can see links to many of the Blogs I visit, web pages that may be of interest to people living in or wanting to visit San Antonio, and I also have link to my oldest brother's web page for his radio show called, The Dream Clinic. 88.5 WMNF is a community radio station and an affiliate of NPR. In Tampa, the station has been very successful and in fact, thanks to donations from listeners, the station has built a state of the art facility next door to the old house that it was originally housed in. The facility is completely Green (as in NPR / Al Gore friendly - not the color) and there are several spacious studios where large groups can be interviewed or an entire band can perform. On Saturday, my brother Dennis gave us the tour of the place, and we were mighty impressed. You can head over to Flickr to see all the pictures if you are someone who enjoys all the excitement of radio and what it takes to make it get from the DJ to your morning commute. If you are a fan of vinyl, you will appreciate the huge wall of albums for the volunteers to select from for their assorted shows. I have often thought of my own personal collection of singles (45 RPM records) as impressive because it is probably a thousand. I could fit my golden oldies (okay, mostly Top-40 hits from the 80's) on just a few of these shelves. And of course, the rolling shelves containing CD's is simply amazing. The library is has numerous listening stations to allow the DJ's to do show prep. While the on air studio was occupied by local personality, Dr. J doing his show, we went into a second studio to pose for pictures. These are pictures of my sister Sharon doing her Nancy Grace impersonation, and me pretending to be, well, me.And look at the awesome equipment in the studio. This stuff is not cheap. The cool thing about community radio, at least in the case of WMNF is that they hold these marathons where the listeners make contributions to keep the station going. The volunteers who produce and present the shows, usually a specific musical genre build an audience and those people put their money where their ears are (to borrow from an inscription on a thousand dollar pledge brick). My brother has been doing his show for years and continues to have a fairly faithful and generous audience. The Dream Clinic plays music from my brother's youth in the 60's and early 70's, most often live recordings from the bands as opposed to the standard two and a half minute Top-40 radio version you might have heard. And because of the technology available today, he has many followers from beyond the broadcast airwaves in the greater Tampa Bay area, thanks to people who listen live or via podcasts on the Internet.
The Dream Clinic on WMNF 88.5FM in Tampa, Florida, USA...also available online at www.wmnf.org The Dream Clinic airs every Wednesday 7-9pm locally and is posted online for your review at www.wmnf.org
With an encyclopedic knowledge of music coupled with genuine love of the bands and their performances, Dennis does a well researched and thoughtfully produced show, providing his listeners with more than just the music you might download from your mom's 8-track tapes. Give it a listen if you like. And if you do like, hit the Tip Jar. How's that for a shameless plug?

News Report: Watch News4 WOAI-TV at 10PM...

So yesterday my sister got her picture taken with Matt Lauer from NBC's Today Show while they were broadcasting from the University of Tampa (she works nearby).I'm thinking, while, that is kinda cool - something you can brag about, I can do better! So today, in an unrelated event, Kim Fischer, (yes; that Kim Fischer) tracked me down through readers of the Blog (thanks Braun Station West), and we helped with a story they are doing on proposed changes to the curfew and how it might help with taggers.I have to tell you, we probably took more of their time than they expected because we couldn't find anyone who wanted to go on camera. Then, because of Kim's professional and cool handling of us, we all ended up talking and painting and the whole nine yards. They probably had to edit out lots of the things we had to say!

By the way, Cameraman Frank told us they would edit the footage to make us look thin and pretty, so if we all look old and plump, it was poor editing!

UPDATE: News4 put together a really nice story and for the "man on the street" response to the curfew issue, my wife Eva ended up getting all the face time and the speaking role. Several of our A-Team members could be seen painting a fence with Eva in the voice over talking about taggers and such. I thought it all really worked well. You can find the video and people's comments to the story here.

Father's Day Report: Calls, Beds, Steaks...

Happy Father's Day to the fathers, single moms and people just being a dad even if you don't have to.

Before I tell you about lunch, I'll just tell you that I spent several hours hitting re-dial on my cell phone in an effort to contact my own father. I kept getting busy signals but figured every other kid who knows his card won't make it until Monday was frantically calling at the same time.

At some point, I decided to call my parent's cell phone and I got the answering machine. As soon as I realized I could get through to the same area code I started to get worried so I called one of my brothers. I got his answering machine. Then I called one of my sisters. She told me that she was driving from Destin down to Tampa and also was unable to get through to my parents, but thought it was just from being on the road and in a bad cell. Next, I called another sister near Minneapolis, and she had just assumed that other brothers and sisters were all calling in - there are seven kids in our family - thus the constant busy signals.

There is that sudden feeling that a child gets when his parents can't be reached in much the same way that a parent starts to worry about their kids. Funny how it works that way. I have heard of helicopter parents, but in this day and age of the Internet and cell phones and instantaneous information, have we all become helicopter kids too?

In just a few minutes, the cell phone rang and it was my older brother's number on the caller ID. It was my dad calling to say that they were at a Father's Day cookout, along with my other brother (hence his answering machine), and yes, their phone was out of service for some reason, and they never leave the cell phone turned on.

It makes me giggle to think about how in my parents youth, people went on trips or moved away and there was no communication save for that collect call from "Ivamadeit Togranmmashous" which was promptly declined, with relief. And our parents survived.

My wife put on the huge surprise this year with the help of my son. I have hinted before about this awesome bed we saw while buying a mattress for our planned guest room. It is one of these fancy Tempur-Pedic deals with the ability to raise and lower the head and the feet and, just in case your back hurts, turn on the massage thing like it was in a seedy motel with all the quarters you can spend.

Over a period of days, my wife had made the purchase, arranged for delivery and as I walked out the door for work on Friday, she and my son moved into action to haul his bed down stairs into the garage, move our bed into my son's room and get the place ready for the delivery folks to bring me my Temur-Pedic, dammit!

When I got out to the parking lot after work, I checked my messages and my wife needed me to pick up laundry and grab some chicken for dinner. I had no idea I was being played to delay my return home.

When I got home, we ate, watched the news and such and finally, close to 6PM, I was ready to go upstairs and change. Usually my son and wife don't follow me upstairs. The next clue was that as I looked down the hall into my son's room, it was obvious furniture had been moved. Suddenly, my wife pipes up, "It was supposed to be a surprise..."
And as soon as I looked into my room and saw the middle of the floor completely empty, I realized what was going on.As it turns out, the delivery was to have taken place around 9 in the morning, but didn't make it until around 6:30 that evening. Surprise!

I was attempting to sleep in this morning when my wife put the phone to my ear and it was my daughter calling to wish me a happy father's day. I put a few more quarters in the bed and went back to sleep!

-----------------------<<<----->>>---------------------

Have you ever gotten an idea for something to eat from a cookbook but thought you'd alter the recipe? Me too. So this afternoon, I whipped up some steak sandwiches for dinner using some New York Strips, grilled and sliced, combined with strips of bacon, honey mustard, onions, and two cheeses. Call the paramedics now, because I can see this being a routine event.

Yesterday, I took these steaks and commenced to soak them overnight in buttermilk. I know, it sounds kinda gross but the folks over at Jeff Kay's WVSR have been talking about this particular method of tenderizing the meat for a week or two, and everyone agrees it rocks. Add me to that list.

After letting the New York Strips bathe in buttermilk for close to 24 full hours, I rinsed them off with cool water - then seasoned them with some sea salt and pepper.
I got some super thick sliced bacon and cooked that up, grated some cheese and even sautéed some onions in olive oil and Italian seasoning.Up next I buttered up these rolls we found at HEB so I could grill them to get 'em toasty. Once off the grill, my wife whipped out our electric knife and commenced to cut the steak into slivers. We weren't sure if this was a good idea or not, but as it turns out, it was a great choice. With honey mustard on the slightly grilled buns, I stuck strips of bacon, loads of steak and cheddar and swiss cheese on top. From there, the sandwiches hit the oven at 435 for about five minutes and we were ready to eat them. The side of fried potatoes made it perfect.

How was your father's day? Tell me about it.

Strange in Valrico: Santa on Vacation...

Right next to my hometown of Brandon is another small but growing town called Valrico, Fl. It seems that over the years, the place has just merged into one extension of Tampa, and thus, requires the shopping amenities available to such a populace.

And lucky for us, because we do what everyone does when vacationing in Florida; we go to Wal Mart.
And as it turns out, so does Santa Claus. Yes, kids, it may sound strange, but Santa shops at Wal Mart just like the rest of us.

Trip Report: Back in The Five-Oh...

And just like magic, my little trip on the plane is over and we are all back in San Antonio without incident.

I'll have a few more reports regarding our excellent visit with my family in Brandon; turns out we have to eat regardless of where we are, so needless to say, my camera and my taste buds were in full attendance.

Our flight back to San Antonio was via Memphis and I am pleased to report that the flight crew kept us abreast of the Spurs-Hornets score during the flight. It is always enjoyable to hear your fellow passengers cheering as opposed to screaming - if you know what I mean.

Oh - just a little comment on technology. I have the type of DVR that allows you to log into the box via the wonder of the World Wide Web. As such, I directed my box in Texas to record the Spurs-Hornets game all the way from Florida. I know, for those of you who still can't make your Beta-Max stop blinking 12:00, it may as well be magic. But in spite of the brilliance of this technology, I do have a complaint.

As our flight hits the runway, my son whips open his cell phone and commences to find the live score to the game. As we get into the baggage claim area, several other folks have the scores updating every minute or so. We get out to our van parked in long-term parking, and tune into 1200-WOAI, and listen live to the last full minute or so of the game. So we got it. We know that the Spurs win game 7 and we are happy.

So I get home, turn on the ol' DVR and decide to watch the last five minutes of the game. If you saw it, you know it was pretty intense up until about the last 50 seconds.

Yea. That's about the time my DVR decided that the game was over. You gotta be shittin' me! 50 seconds left in a game 7. I thought it was the season finale to The Sopranos!

Anyway. More on the trip to Florida and the usual nonsense when I get my bags unpacked.

Lunch Report: Shells in Clearwater...

We had no intention of going to the beach in some sort of a "get wet, get sand on ourselves, get sunburned" type of fashion, but it was worth a drive over to Clearwater just to show off the place to my daughter's husband who had never been to Florida before. Make no mistake, there are loads of more finely tuned beaches within the price of gas, but I have always had a fondness for Clearwater, and it is easy.

We all agreed that we were ready for lunch and with the help of Garmin, decided on Shells.

You can't come to Florida and not get yourself some seafood, and this was as good a place as any. We opted to sit outside at Shell's Bridge Bar on a deck with a Tiki Bar. There was a light but solid breeze that kept it somewhat cool, but thankfully we had an umbrella for shade.
Our waitress Angie, was Johnny on the spot with iced teas and some incredible, warm and very soft rolls that were simply awesome. I think they could have brought us a few baskets of the rolls and sent us on our way, and we would have all been pleased.

But we ordered lunch and got even more of a treat.
Our son-in-law got the Fried Seafood Combo which is loaded with an assortment of shrimp, calamari, coconut shrimp and catfish. With the fries, you could feed a small family of vegans. My wife and daughter shared the same combo but opted for whitefish as opposed to the catfish. My son ordered up a Beer-battered fish and chips platter and he described it as being "Sorta like Long John Silvers, only good."

I got another one of the platters that contained whitefish, bay scallops, shrimp and clams. The plates came with an incredible Cole slaw with a surprise - mandarin orange slices mixed in with it. Who comes up with these little twists? Good choice. As our waitress said, it makes the Cole slaw almost like a dessert.
Speaking of the waitress, we had a seasoned pro who worked the entire Bridge Bar area almost unassisted and pulled it off without a hitch. She was quick with a refill of tea, knew all the daily specials and was quick to make suggestions when anyone hesitated with the ordering.

And I darn near stiffed her on the tip. Let me explain. You may recall me complaining about my crappy cell phone that has a mind of its own. I know, I probably should have replaced the stupid thing months ago, but I just haven't. And, since I use the handy Tip Calculator that comes complimentary with my cell phone service, it is often jacked-up just like the rest of the phone.

So, when we got the bill, my wife asked me how much the total was so she could use her phone (which works) to give me a tip amount. I know - we could have avoided all this had I simply demonstrated as much interest in mathematics in school as I do eating. The long and the short of it is, I told my wife the total, she heard a different number and thus, gave me a lesser tip amount than what I think the outstanding service deserved.
As we were driving away, everyone totally stuffed and ready for a nap, somehow the cost of lunch came up (I think it was about $78.00 for the five of us) and my wife said, "That's not what you said." Suddenly, I was horrified with the thought that after having such good service, we looked like total cheapskates. My wife had told me a Tip amount of $10 and I left $12.00. I guess, technically $12.00 is fine but I would ask this of those of you who might find yourself in Clearwater, FL and get a hankering for a seafood platter. If you go to Shells, can you give an extra buck or two to Angie, and let her know we appreciated her service.
