It Must Be The Playoffs: Drunk Spurs Guy is Back...

I have to confess that I am a second half of the season Spurs fan. That is to say, I don't even watch the Spurs until after the All Star Break, and even then, I usually only watch the second half of the games until it comes time for the playoffs.

And what do I like about the NBA Playoffs? Oh sure, the basketball itself is entertaining enough, but I love the moments during time-outs where they cut to the national announcers, either TNT or in the case of tonight's Spurs-Mavs game, ESPN.
By the third quarter, Drunk Spurs Fan (he could be sober as a judge, but he looks drunk) is in rare form. Hey, if he can afford those tickets, he is free to get as liquored up as he wants. Plus, it can be some fine entertainment.Oh, and this lady sitting near him seems surprised that Drunk Spurs Guy is maintaining his cool at this point in the game.

Leon Valley Market Days Report...

I had made a mental note (and then called my wife to write it down) to check out the Leon Valley Market Days held the second Saturday of each month. As you would expect, it is supposed to be a gathering of people selling things - sort of like a flea market, but the emphasis seems to be on crafts and such.

This Saturday, we took the short drive to the Leon Valley Conference & Community Center and found that because of the uncertain weather situation and the action in Houston and Galveston, the number of vendors was less than what they usually host.

So, just a few pictures of what we did see, and then you can check out the rest of them on the Flickr page.
I've seen many of these cars at other places, I'm sure. I didn't take the time to go admire each vehicle, but needless to say, there are a few beauties. Inside one of the facilities, there were lots of crafts and such. We enjoyed seeing this creative idea: Spurs purses made out of newspaper clippings and duct tape! That is high fashion!Lots of different crafts that seemed interesting and often, overpriced for my tastes. But isn't that how it always is? Whenever we pass by a particular item of wood working, my wife will say, "Oh, you could make that." I usually think to myself, "Yea, but why?" They had some nicely refinished antiques and lots of beads and candles and other things. In another building, it was more of the same - more handcrafted earrings and beads and stuff that I just don't need.Outside, there were several interesting vendors. We found this trailer from Uncertain Farms in Seguin. I couldn't help but buy some of their Garlic Salsa and I'm here to tell you, it was a hit! (Those are my wife's homemade chips in the bag). And outdoors, there were quite a few vendors selling more crafts and plants and such. The weather was nice and they even had folks selling food and such in case you get hungry. My guess is, when the place is filled with all the vendors who normally show, it is probably worth an hour to wander around and see it all.

Know of a market we need to see? Tell me about it.

Trip Report: Back in The Five-Oh...

And just like magic, my little trip on the plane is over and we are all back in San Antonio without incident.

I'll have a few more reports regarding our excellent visit with my family in Brandon; turns out we have to eat regardless of where we are, so needless to say, my camera and my taste buds were in full attendance.

Our flight back to San Antonio was via Memphis and I am pleased to report that the flight crew kept us abreast of the Spurs-Hornets score during the flight. It is always enjoyable to hear your fellow passengers cheering as opposed to screaming - if you know what I mean.

Oh - just a little comment on technology. I have the type of DVR that allows you to log into the box via the wonder of the World Wide Web. As such, I directed my box in Texas to record the Spurs-Hornets game all the way from Florida. I know, for those of you who still can't make your Beta-Max stop blinking 12:00, it may as well be magic. But in spite of the brilliance of this technology, I do have a complaint.

As our flight hits the runway, my son whips open his cell phone and commences to find the live score to the game. As we get into the baggage claim area, several other folks have the scores updating every minute or so. We get out to our van parked in long-term parking, and tune into 1200-WOAI, and listen live to the last full minute or so of the game. So we got it. We know that the Spurs win game 7 and we are happy.

So I get home, turn on the ol' DVR and decide to watch the last five minutes of the game. If you saw it, you know it was pretty intense up until about the last 50 seconds.

Yea. That's about the time my DVR decided that the game was over. You gotta be shittin' me! 50 seconds left in a game 7. I thought it was the season finale to The Sopranos!

Anyway. More on the trip to Florida and the usual nonsense when I get my bags unpacked.

What Happens When City Folk Move to The Country...

I kid you not, just the other night whilst watching the Spurs Vs. Hornets debacle with the ring of fire incident, I heard my dog barking in the back yard. I interrupted my mocking of the Hornets' staff to go investigate, and sure enough, my dog Gracie is barking at an Opossum frozen on the fence.

Yea, here in The Five-Oh, we get opossums, raccoons, skunks and other forms of wildlife.

So a friend sent me this picture with the caption:"What Happens When City Folk Move to The Country".

Spurs Vs Hornets: Ring Of Fire...Really!

I think I'm going to stick with the Spurs Coyote as a favorite mascot. The NO Hornets mascot, Hugo, tried a little flaming dunk action but things just didn't turn out as expected...Oh, he made it through the ring of fire and even dunked. Unfortunately, the crew couldn't get the fire to stop and the end result was a huge delay while they attempted to clean the fire extinguisher powder from the floor. I'm sure someone is getting fired over this.

Spurs - Suns: Gorilla Situation...

So I'm minding my own business watching the Spurs-Suns game and as they come back from a commercial, I catch the Suns mascot, The Gorilla dressed up as a taco. I have to ask (since I wasn't at the game to hear the MC), was the Gorilla mocking San Antonio's Henry the Puffy Taco? If so, that's just wrong.

If not, that's a pretty damn ugly shirt for a Gorilla.

Let's Rodeo, San Antonio...

I don't do Cowboy Breakfast because I have a job. I'm sorry if that sounds as though I don't have the spirit.

In fairness, my wife and I do go to the rodeo every year on Valentines Day, not to see any concerts or to actually watch the rodeo events, but we make an afternoon of looking at livestock, shopping inside the Joe & Harry Freeman Coliseum, and happily paying Spurs game rates for beer as we walk around collecting free samples from eager vendors and radio stations. Oh, and we dig the onion blossoms.

For the first time in nine years, the rodeo folks decided to run some cattle down Houston Street to get some local attention, and you better believe that we were in place, camera in hand and ready to celebrate the cause.

In case you couldn't make it, here are a few pictures of what you missed from start to finish as if you were lined up like we were on Houston and Main in downtown SA.
As we readied ourselves for the big event, it was pretty exciting to imagine that we were just steps away from the famous Bob Lee, Air Conditioned Hotel on Houston Street in downtown SA waiting to see some cattle. Oh, and as a note; I always complain about the lack of places to pee downtown, so kudos to the Riverwalk Market & Deli who served up some piping warm coffee at a fair price and a clean restroom when my wife needed to make a sprinkle.I have to tell you, the city had their act together. we parked and walked over to a good place to stand (toward the beginning of the route - not the end by the Alamo) and watched as police officers manned the intersections in preparation for the cattle drive. Soon, city crews came by and quickly blocked off the streets with barricades so that cars would stop and the cattle would stay on course. Likewise, rodeo ladies in their official jackets and beehive hairdos readied themselves for the drive, and crowds of bystanders eagerly waited for the big event.Moments later, we could see the cowboys (and girls) coming down the street. Let's not freak out here. We have all seen cows and cattle and such, if not in a zoo, at least in the meat section of our local HEB; but I have to tell you, this up close and personal business is pretty entertaining.
And the cows...
At one point as I was busily taking pictures, one of the cows took an interest in me and seemed to wander my way. I looked up at one of the cowboys on his horse and gave him the international sign for, "Holy Shit" by saying, "Holy Shit!" He recognized my anxiety and simply gave a quick, "Whoop!" and the cow moved along.
In all, the 35 mostly well behaved cattle made their way past us in a matter of minutes on their way to the Alamo where I can only assume that a big crowd slaughtered them, then ate them. But from our vantage point, we got to see the rest of the event to include horse riders, waving big rodeo flags and showing off beautiful horses, boots, and hats.Up next, the clean up crew came - first in the form of some guys with shovels...then, always a crowd favorite at parades... the guy in the street sweeper. Finally, what would a rodeo be without a rodeo clown or two?

Our total time from start to finsih was less than half an hour, but it was something you just don't see everyday, at least here in San Antonio.

Shopping Report: HEB Super Mercado

The other day I was coming from downtown SA via Culebra. I may have mentioned it before but I sometimes take this route even though it is slightly longer, because I enjoy the scene as I go from downtown, through the West Side, and somehow transition into where I live all on the same street.

Yes, I'm easily entertained.

My wife called me and suggested that I pick up a bottle of coffee creamer on the way home. We use HEB's Half & Half at a rate of almost a bottle and a half a week, but then again, between me and a cup or two from my wife, we drink about three pots of coffee a day.

Anywho, I often pass this HEB Super Mercado on Culebra and, I think Bandera, and decided to stop in for a look see.

The first thing that makes this HEB different is the fact that there is what appears to be a huge circus tent covering the entire front driveway of the store. Under this tent you can find raspa vendors, vending machines and picnic tables, and as I suspected, the inviting smell of spilled beer and stale urine.

But aside from that festive atmosphere, I liked the idea that this seemed to be a community HEB with friendly people doing their shopping and banking and such.

I only needed to pick up a few items, so my stop was short, but I did find one lady completely obsessed with the Spurs Memorabilia rack. Enough to block people in both directions of the main thoroughfare until I calmly and courteously pulled rank on her and asked her to kindly step aside. She was happy to scoot over but once I left was soon back in the way of others. Nice.

For too many reasons that make sense, I did not bother to take a picture of what I am about to describe, though with proper lighting and a permit, I could have made a full length motion picture; A nice lady of perhaps 35 or 40 in standard mu moo wear, was in line unloading her cart. You already know where I'm going and I shouldn't say more, but as my wife says, once I start writing, I can't seem to shut-up.

Full-on chi-chi action, and it was not a site for the timid.

You have to look. You know you do because it is an oddity. Yes, probably seen at 100 topless beaches Europe or Austin as we speak, but in an HEB, we as common citizens are not prepared for the spectacle of some lady letting her full left boob and a good pound or two of the right, simply hanging loose for public inspection like it was a side of beef hung out for display complete with USDA markings, or in this case, a poorly done neighborhood tattoo, clearly from Junior High or perhaps the All Lady's Prison.

I mean no ill-will toward this lady or her body modifications; but please, a little decorum in the HEB for God's sake.

Anyway, a clean place on the inside, nice and fragrant on the outside; I'd go there again if I needed a raspa.

Good Call!

Yep - when the screen went blank, my wife screamed, cursing the TV and prepared to cancel our cable provider and even file suit.

Meanwhile, the Spurs were up by 20 in the second quarter.

Dilemma no more.

The Big Dilemma: The Final Sopranos or The Finals

In probably only two cities in the entire country, there is a major conflict of "Must See" TV tonight: The final episode of The Sopranos on HBO or, the NBA Finals featuring the San Antonio Spurs and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Chances are, if you are reading this from somewhere besides the two cities in question, the choice is very easy.

But I have been weighing the options all day. Granted, the Finals is live and if you record it, you've lost the thrill of seeing it live. I'm one of those people who can't enjoy a sporting event once I know the final outcome (with one notable exception). I mean, if I had a crystal ball and knew that a certain team won, I'd be satisfied to catch the highlight reel on ESPN or something. So with this mindset, I set up my DVR to record The Sopranos.

Then my wife got involved. She also wants to see the Spurs do battle with the Cavs, but she pointed out that her brother will start exactly six minutes before 8PM CST calling us to remind us about the Sopranos. Then, he'll call again as soon as the opening credits have rolled to make sure we remembered his call from earlier. And this calling will go on throughout the entire episode.

Her logic is, if someone calls and says' "Tony just got whacked", we'd be extremely upset. On the other hand, if someone calls and says, "Did you just see Tim Duncan swat the ball away from Lebron James?", we'd ask what the score was, and be happy for the Spurs.

So, I think you can see where I'm going with this. I will be recording the Spurs-Cavs game, watching the final episode of The Sopranos and then switch over at 9:05PM just in time for the start of the 3rd quarter of the Finals.

If anything really good like someone gets ejected or they show the drunk Spurs fan, I'll be happy to rewind the DVR and catch it in due course. Like that creepy brother of Napoleon Dynamite, Kip once sang, "I love technology".

Adventures in Travel: Part 3

A few final notes about my recent trip to New Jersey and the flight back. I know, I was planning to keep this short, but I sometimes find that I tend to be long-winded after taking in so much new and interesting details of the things that surround me.

First off, a few quick points about New Jersey. Here in Texas and I think in most other places, there seems to be this running joke about how bad The Garden State really is. I mean, the general assumption that everything is run down and the Mob is everywhere (which they may be) and that it is just a bad place to go. Well, let me just say, I found the place to be very beautiful. I can only assume that they pay a boatload of taxes there, or somehow New Jersey is siphoning off way more federal highway dollars than Texas is, because the roads, and the scenery along the roads were so totally superior to my beloved Texas, and especially, San Antonio.

We can’t do anything about the fact that everything here is dry and brown, but the general architecture of the roadways and the fact that they make an attempt to have things look attractive is a huge difference. They have some crazy idea of “no left turns against oncoming traffic” going on to where you have to get off the road on the right hand side and loop around to a light in order to cross the traffic. It sounds awkward, but I fully see and appreciate the safety aspect involved.

They also seem to plan restaurants and places where you have to enter the place from a rear street. This not only makes the appearance from the road nicer, but it also keeps traffic moving because you don’t have ten cars turning into ten different stores one after another. Instead, everybody exits the main thoroughfare and then enters the selected store from the slower off streets.

I did snap a picture of something of historic interest during my trip that, unless you see it in person, you can’t really appreciate the size. This is Golden Boy.

Golden Boy is located at the Global Network Operations Center for AT&T but it has a long and rich history that I find somewhat entertaining; when originally sculpted, Golden Boy (who is nekkid) was given very accurate proportions. So, standing at 24 feet tall, that makes his chin bigger, his wings bigger, his feet bigger… well, everything bigger. When the statue stood at the top of a tall building in New York City, this was not much of an issue, unless you were a pigeon looking for a place to perch, but when the statue was moved to the lobby of a new building, the former AT&T president (even before Ed Whitacre) made the John Ashcroft-like move and had the statue covered until artists could go in and perform a bit of surgery, to make Golden Boy not stand out as much. All I can say is, standing directly below the statue in question, I can only guess they could have done a lot more surgery! You can read more about it here.

So a colleague of mine brought one of those nifty Garmin GPS type systems with him and we used it to find our way around the area; if you have never used one of these puppies, I’m here to tell you, it works! You cannot get lost. I’m searching E-Bay to see what kind of a deal I could get without having to sell the dogs for lunchmeat.

I think Newark Liberty airport is pretty well laid out. But when we dropped off the rental car, there was an awkward smell. One co-worker said it smelled of potato chips. I voted for a combination of stale beer and human urine.

Anyway, from the rental car drop-off to the AirTrain that takes you to the terminals and up to the check-in area was all quite efficient, and there were helpful attendants along the way to make sure you knew where to go. Well done, I say.

When you have some time to kill before your flight boards, not because you got to the airport super early, but because the flight is delayed for about two hours, you take a few minutes in between pages of a book or magazine to observe various things. For instance, I finally realized the difference between coach class and Continental’s OnePass Elite Class: the Elite people get a little piece of carpet to walk on before they enter the plane.

Whoever the genius was who came up with this marketing strategy should get a bonus.

So, the flight home was somewhat uneventful, once we got started.

Once again, I had no fat people or screaming kids to contend with, but we did have a 7 foot tall giant, namely Patrick Ewing, the former Knicks star who was on his way to SAT for game one of the NBA Finals – a Spurs fan, I’m sure. Oh, and there was at least one guy who clearly had not bathed in days. Either that, or he was wearing some sort of Musk as though he might be a Hostess at Chili’s.

I should really brush up on my geography of the East as I hadn’t realized that Newark was nothing more than a suburb of NYC. No offense to the good people of Newark. So we got a great view of the Statue of Liberty just as the sun started to set, and the skyline of the city made me want to visit for more than just a brief layover at JFK on the way to Europe. Aren’t I the world traveler? Your tax dollars; my memories.

Anyway, the good news was, the plane was not full and I was seated in a row with a co-worker in the window seat, an empty seat in the middle and me on the aisle. Across the aisle from me was a Father from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. We didn’t engage in confession or anything, but I felt confident that should we plunge from the sky, I could sort of grab his coat tails and hope for the best.

Though we obviously didn’t crash, there were several times during the 4-hour flight where, given the option, well, let’s just say that some poor infant toward the front of the aircraft was in desperate need of an Exorcism, yet the good Father seemed totally unfazed by the Devil Child and slept soundly through dinner and two beverage services.

Several times, I thought of Patrick Ewing (who by the way was very friendly to people who passed by him – looking up to smile and acknowledge the giddy little people on the flight) and wished that he would have used his massive size and appearance to hover over the little child and make a scary grimace or some ugly face so as to scare the little child into cardiac arrest, or at least leave him so scarred as to not have the ability to cry, for at least 4 hours. But, I suppose he has some of those fancy sound-canceling headphones and was never bothered by it.

How was your last trip out of Texas? Tell me about it.
