Dinner Report: Papa Murphy's Chicago Style...

I continue to be pleased with the quality and price of Papa Murphy's pizza, you know, the kind they prepare at their shop, then you take home and bake at your leisure. Tonight, my wife picked up huge Chicago Style pizza for only $9.00 and it was awesome.

But first, the complaint: The other day when we were at HEB Plus, we happened to see a sign at the Papa Murphy's on Potranco that said something about Customer Appreciation day on Tuesday. I suppose they offered some special deal that caught my wife's attention, so she went to our regular Papa Murphy's on Culebra and 1604 to get in on it. Turns out, they only appreciate the customers at Potranco, not any of the other stores. Whatever. I submit they have the best deal on pizza, period.
Anyway, since she couldn't get whatever the special customer appreciation deal was, she ordered the huge Chicago Style pizza, regular $13.99 for a large (which is way more than even four people ought to be able to legally eat, much less two) for $9. You just take it home, toss it in your oven, and a few minutes later it is resting itself on your hips and thighs.
The pizza is one of those stuffed with two layers of dough. It comes with Salami, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Ground beef, Roma tomatoes, sauce, mozzarella and onions. She substituted spinach for the onions.
Seriously, if you haven't given Papa Murphy's a shot over the usual Pizza Hut or Domino's, you really ought to. Otherwise, you're missing out on a Tasty Treat!

Dinner Report: Pizza Hut on Grissom...

I was back in the Five Oh earlier than normal today and my wife and I thought it would be a perfect time to grab a quick bite from the recently moved and opened Pizza Hut-Wing Street place on Grissom Road at Timber Path. Seriously, just ban me from the place right now.

A quick note about pizza. I love pizza. I could seriously eat an entire pizza, and the greasier the better. The problem is, I am ready to fall asleep three bites into the first slice. The dough, especially the hand tossed, and really thick pan types just do me in. Just bust out a 1000mg of Metformin, and maybe I'll be okay.
But if you take the time to add the name Wing Street to a place called Pizza Hut, now I am forced to try not only the pizza, but also the wings. Is there a cardiologist in the house?
And of course, as promised, my wife and I are attempting to use the Entertainment Book coupons everywhere we dine now, and it just so happens that we had a coupon for a free order of cheesy bread sticks (or whatever the Pizza Hut name for them is) as well as a pitcher of soda.

The place is sparkly and new. I originally thought that it was smaller, but come to find out, it takes up half of the new building built in front of Stacy's Sports Bar on Grissom. I like the set-up inside. Very modern sports bar look with flat panels everywhere and a serious Texas and San Antonio theme.I'll keep this short. Using our coupon, we got the bread stick things. They are so good that you just can't help but want to eat all of them before your pizza arrives. But we didn't. Instead, I think we ate one each and if I am correct, they are sitting in my refrigerator next to the microwave as we speak.

By the way, instead of getting a pitcher of soda free with the coupon, my wife asked the waiter to just knock off the price of her Iced Tea. He agreed, but now that I think about it, I don't think he did. I ordered a single Mich Ultra at $4.00 for 12 little ounces. Hey, maybe in Stacy's where I am told that the waitresses are scantily clad, but at Pizza Hut? Really? Note to management: Get some draft on tap and save us a buck.
I had to order the wings mild so my wife could try them. She no-likey the hot stuff. I thought the wings were excellent - not overcooked as some tend to be, and they were nice and meaty. I think it was $6.99 for 10 of them, and with the little tub of Ranch dressing, I thought the price was fair. Our coupon for the free bread sticks stipulated that we had to purchase the large pizza as opposed to a medium (They don't have small). The large is what I suspect a medium was back in the day. Don't get me wrong, it isn't that there wasn't way more than enough for two, even four people, but I'm just telling you, it is smaller than I recall.

And that brings me to the point of why I rarely go to pizza hut. I love the pizza. They make a reasonably good product, but for the price, I just get the feeling like I have been to a regular full scale restaurant. After the coupon and before the tip, the bill was $27.01. Granted, we wouldn't have ordered both the pizza and the wings had we not known that we would be taking at least half of it to-go, but still, we could eat at Texas Roadhouse for that.

No complaints about the food, service, or atmosphere at the new Pizza Hut - Wing Street on Grissom, but if I'm going to eat myself into a coma, I'll spend a lot less and just go to Papa Murphy's.

Am I an utter cheapskate? Someone, set me straight here!

Dinner Report: Rome's Pizza...

My wife and I found need to be at the intersection of 1604 and Culebra (or near there) this evening to make a run into our local Home Depot. As we had not engaged in a proper meal in hours, we decided to call into the newly opened Rome's Pizza, and order up some to-go snackage. Before I get to the vittles, I need to report a serious issue at this newly swamped intersection and the approaches thereto; San Antonio still does not know how to synchronize a traffic light, or, there is probably an off-duty police officer in front of the Wells Fargo bank, screwing things up.

My friends (in my best John McCain voice), it is only going to get worse. The reason my wife and I hate Bandera Pointe (the intersection of 1604 and, well, Bandera), is that there are too many vehicles trying to be there at once. Well, welcome to Alamo Ranch. Same problem.
But enough of my traffic whining. Let's talk about pizza. Rome's Pizza.

We ordered a 12 inch pepperoni and just for good measure, a Calzone with pineapple and ham. In case you aren't familiar with the nomenclature, a Calzone is an oven baked half moon turnover stuffed with pizza sauce, mozzarella and the pizza toppings you order. When we lived in Italy, we would have a similar thing called a fritilli which was fried instead of baked. Good times.
As soon as I walked in to pick up the order, I was pleased to see an very clean and seemingly well organized operation. I will confess that the prices seemed a bit spendy, but you have to pay for quality. Anyway, the place looks nice inside but not anything boothy like a Pizza Hut. More of a Subway or Jasons Deli. When we got the food and headed home, I have to confess that both my wife and I were not immediately impressed. Mostly because of the size of the pizza compared to the price. Keep in mind, we were literally 100 yards from Papa Murphy's - easily the best value of any person seeking to gorge themsleves into a new pants size for under $15.00. The pizza looked thin and the Calzone looked small in the box it came in.

But when you are stuck in traffic, things don't always appear to be as they really are. Oh sure, with my wife driving, I could have easily just grabbed a slice and started tossing pizza down my gullet, but I opted to wait the short drive until we got home. And once there, we could really smell the goodness and start to dig in - and only then did it become apparent that Rome's is a winner.
Like many of you, I suffer pains from most of the pizza sauces found in contemporary pizza today. That is one of the reasons I like Papa Murphy. The dipping sauce that came with Rome's Calzone and the sauce that grazed our pepperoni was purely excellent - not acidy at all. Kudos! and of course, the pizza crust was thin and excellent. The Calzone had a nice crust and was soft, not disturbingly hard or burnt like the one we had at House of Pizza on our last (and I do mean, last) visit. So there you go. Bring money, bring an appetite and don't let the rush hour traffic get you down. Rome's Pizza gets a Tasty Treat.

I'm sure you've tried the new Rome's. How did you like it? How was the traffic. Leave a comment if you'd like...

Raw Pizza Report: Papa Murphy's...

Have you heard of this pizza place called Papa Murphy's? Me neither. My wife and son were out running some errands when they came across this place in the HEB shopping center at 1604 and Culebra. The theme is Take 'N' Bake Pizza.

So I walk in the door after work this evening and the house smells incredibly wonderful like maybe my wife had a huge lasagna in the oven or something. Turns out, they had just pulled out this Papa Murphy's pizza that was loaded with about a pound of cheese, sausage, pepperoni and I don't know what else, but I couldn't even wait to ask who, what, when or where, I just grabbed a piece and guided it toward my gullet. I swear, the piece weighed about a pound!

In the oven was another pie, some version of cheese bread and it was equally awesome.

So the deal is, these people don't have an oven. You go in and order the type of crust, whatever toppings etc, they build the thing and give you heating instructions, then you take it home and cook it in your own oven.
They also have salads and cookies too.

I'm stuffed to the point of needing a nap, but you should give it a try.

Definitely worthy of mulitple Tasty Treats.
